Yes. This is what I do too. Works every time, is good for the soil, and the cardboard is free! I have also done this in my beds to eliminate weeds, and encourage worms. It does wear down over a year, but I just put new cardboard under the new mulch in the spring, where needed.

I didn't think you should mound up the soil around a tree like that, I thought it could kill them.

You two did a nice job. It looked great when you were finished. I cant say the same for your camera man, it sure was hard on the eyes when (who ever) moved it around in so many directions and so fast.

I hate to be a downer, but unfortunately specimen in video is only a limited-service life silver maple, already facing catastrophic failure problems after said tree produced two poorly attached competing codominant stems that could have only been prevented through structural pruning. Which is a specialized required pruning method completed when all trees are still young. Regarding landscape practice documented in video. Any grade change that can result in suffocating original root system, will cause production of new adventitious roots to grow above ground surface in order to have access to atmospheric oxygen again. In fact when people mound base of a Tree in mulch. They are actually installing a composting bed, possibly to compost tree once it dies as well. Doh! And while a healthy tree will have no problem regrowing an entirely new fibrous root system. Is suggested that any landscaping work similar to what had taken place in video, only take place some 8 feet or further out from surrounding trunk. In order to prevent any new root growth by tree, from tripping up its enlarging trunk in the decades ahead. Unfortunately adventitious roots are similar to drowning swimmers losing sense of direction. And will become a network of criss crossing roots rather than, original roots that were all outbound away from trunk. Arboriculturists such as myself also suggest permanently installing perennials rather than replanting annuals every year. Especially around the base of young trees which are most sensitive to root disturbance. In the future...Folks also need to remember to rake out most of old mulch before laying down layer of new wood chips. Otherwise retained layer below new layer will decompose and turn into new soil. Resulting in artificially raising grade over trees existing root system. If thats the goal, it would just be easier laying down new layer of black soil.

Excellent video (Thank you Lucinda) and I fear the glues used in card boards. I unfortunately also live in an HOA neighborhood and planting anything other than flowers is apparently a sin against the gods of the HOA.

  • @marthajf73

Actually you should not apply mulch in 2 to 3 inches around trees. The mulch allows voles, mice and other pests secret access to your tree.
